Verdict:

I have been with Bluehost since Jan 2006. I have several domains hosted through them and not one time have I ever thought about switching hosting companies. I have dealt with billing and support services and they have always demonstrated a professional and helpful attitude.

One of the Best Out There!

Advantages: You can host videos and pictures. Unlimited bandwidth and data storage. great support. reasonable price.
Disadvantages: They don't have dedicated hosting in case you want to upgrade in the future, but that will only happen when your website become really popular.

Verdict: My placeholder site was hacked several times before I even put any content up, and Bluehost seems to believe it is my responsibility to secure the site. It should be secure by default! Customer service was responsive, but they provide information that is not for someone not already familiar with securing a website. I am fairly computer literate, but I could not figure out how to keep it from happening, and bluehost support keeps reiterating that it is my responsibility to secure my content. Note that my site still has extremely low traffic, a secure password, and I am not using any scripts or software that should allow hacking that bypasses security. So how have I been hacked pretty much every 3 months since I started with bluehost?

Bluehost.com entered the hosting business in 2002. Fast forward almost ten years and the Bluehost  of today is one of the most well known names in the shared hosting industry. Recently acquired by Endurance International Group (EIG), Bluehost offers unlimited shared Linux hosting plans.

Sales

I connected with Bluehost on live chat, which took a surprisingly short amount of time. Within thirty seconds of requesting a live chat, I was introduced to a Bluehost sales rep named Nick. Nick knew his stuff, answered each and every one of my questions thoroughly and easily, and shared a bit of Bluehost’s history with me. Awesome service!

Setup

It takes all of thirty seconds to sign up for a Bluehost account. Users need only fill out a short online form and pay for an account with a credit or debit card. It quite literally took under one minute from start to finish for my account to be made ready for use. Fastest setup I’ve ever seen!

Billing

Bluehost accepts all major credit cards and requires that clients pay at least one year in advance. At the end of my one year term, I was ready to cancel my account and move on, though I had great difficulty doing so. Despite cancelling my account both by phone and online one month before the end of my term, I was billed not once, not twice, but three times by Bluehost in the months following cancellation. I attempted to straighten this out with the billing department, but was told than in order to do so, I’d need to FAX them a copy of my I.D. to get assistance. This process took more than a week and didn’t resolve my problem either. In the end, I was triple-billed by Bluehost and five months after cancelling, I was finally given a refund. It’s worth mentioning that the Bluehost billing department has set hours and is not available 24/7, so billing issues can take some time to resolve.

Pricing

Bluehost offers unlimited plans, meaning that you’ll be given an unlimited amount of space and bandwidth for a set fee. If you pay one year in advance, the cost is $6.95 a month. Pay at least two years ahead of time the price drops down to $5.95 each month. Considering users get a free domain name with every hosting plan, Bluehost is a great deal.

Reliability

I was with Bluehost for one year. My hosting server suffered from repeated corrupted hard drives during the first six months, but all was smooth sailing during the latter half of the year.

Help & Support

Bluehost supports customers by live chat, an online help desk and a toll-free telephone number. I found live chat to be virtually worthless for technical support. Each time I contacted live chat I was referred to the help desk or phone. Basic technical support takes 12-24 hours by help desk, making Bluehost a little slow on the uptake. On a good note, support reps did not appear to be outsourced and were very thorough and helpful.

Uptime

I use a premium uptime monitor to keep track of domains. That monitor indicated that Bluehost met or exceeded their 99.9% uptime guarantee.

  • Accounts will be automatically renewed unless cancelled manually within 16 days of expiration date.
