How to Choose a Website Designer?

Published on 2/27/2011 by

Thanks to website designers, even those who have no idea what HTML is or how to code a web page can now get a website online.  Website designers offer their professional services to users who need a fully functioning website, but have no idea how to put one together.  But how does one go about choosing a website designer and what services will you require?

How to find the best web design services team

There are hundreds and hundreds of website designers online today, each claiming to be the best of the best. While most designers excel at what they do, not all designers will be right for you.  You’ll want to find a website designer or design team who has the same vision as you in order to get the job done to your satisfaction.  How do you do that?  You start by learning more about the web designer himself.  You can do that by looking for the following things.

Portfolio:  Every website designer worthy of his reputation will have a design portfolio available to potential clients for viewing.  You’ll almost always find this on the designer’s website.  Study the portfolio.  Does it impress you?  Would you hire this designer based on his past work?

Verifiable online presence:  Anyone can claim to have designed a website and include it in their portfolio, which is why you’ll want to make sure that your designer has a verifiable presence online.  One of the ways to accomplish this is to verify that the websites listed in his portfolio were actually designed by him and that past clients were pleased with his work.  Ask designers for testimonials and then validate those testimonials by speaking with former clients. Good designers with well earned reputations will have no trouble supplying this information to you and many will have it freely available on their websites.

Specialties:  Some designers specialize in building eCommerce websites from the ground up and others only create the graphical website layout and expect that you’ll put all the pieces together.  While one designer creates Flash based web pages, another may code in multiple languages.  What do you need? Understand what web designers specialize in.

Added services:  Many website designers do only one thing and that is to design websites.  If you need a shopping cart coded or installed, web hosting, search engine optimization and copywriting performed, your job will demand a designer who offers such added services.

Rates available:  Does the design team charge by the hour or by completed project?  You won’t want to receive a surprise bill for thousands of dollars once your website is finished, so understand how each designer bills so that you can stay within your budget.

Maintenance:   Do you only need a designer to build a website and then hand it over for you to upload to your web hosting server or will you require a designer who can also perform routine maintenance for you, like rewriting content, adding products to your eCommerce store or applying software upgrades.

Time frame:  How much time do you have before you need your website online?  All designers have their own processes which will start with getting a quote and building a series of draft websites for you to approve or send back for improvement. Know each designer’s process and guaranteed turnaround time.

Finding a great web designer to build your next award winning website is not a difficult task, but it does take some time and work on your part.  Since you’ll be investing money in the services of a designer, be sure you’ll be getting your money’s worth by carefully considering your needs and your budget, understanding what services you will require, and by verifying that the designer in question can complete the task at hand.
